Hybrid Adsorbent
ACF-MOF@Fiber

We load metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals onto activated carbon fiber, combining ACF, which captures broadly, with MOF, which captures selectively. With this material we design 4-layer composite filters and regenerable filters.

01 · MOF@FIBER

ACF captures broadly,
MOF captures selectively

Some gases are hard to capture with activated carbon fiber alone. So we load ZIF-8 metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals onto the fiber surface and bring the two materials together.

A MOF is a porous crystal in which metal ions and organic molecules form a regular lattice. Depending on the size and chemistry of its pores, it tends to pick out and hold particular gases.

Instead of mixing in MOF powder, we grow the crystals on the fiber, so that the material sits evenly throughout the filter.

02 · 4-LAYER COMPOSITE FILTER

Four stages of filtering
in one filter

Each layer has its own role, in the order the air passes through. With the front layers stopping dust and particles, the adsorbent layers behind can concentrate on gases.

03 · LOW-TEMPERATURE ELECTRIC REGENERATION

Regenerated and reused, not thrown away

An adsorbent that is full of gas is usually replaced. Carbon fiber conducts electricity, so passing a current through the fiber heats it, releases the captured gas, and lets the material be used again. We apply a structure that regenerates with electricity, without separate steam or vacuum equipment.

Regeneration conditions are designed for each product and target gas.

AdsorptionACF and MOF@Fiber layers capture gases from the air.
Electric heatingA current through the fiber heats the material itself.
Desorption · dischargeThe captured gas comes off and is discharged.
ReuseThe material is ready to adsorb again.
